Why the Bavaria C38 is the Best Yacht for First Time Buyers

Bavaria C38 for New Sailors

Bavaria C38 is yet another example of the success that comes from marrying German engineering with Italian design. Built and designed by Bavaria Yachts and Cossuti Yacht Design teams, the C38 was bought to the market in 2021 following in the footsteps of her award-winning big sister the C42.

Her introduction to the market answered a lot of questions for first time buyers, with easy handling as her defining characteristic; paired with style, comfort and incredible uses of space. The Bavaria C38 changed the narrative for what a first boat can look like in the modern age.

Easy-Handling

The entirety of the Bavaria C-line range focuses on easy handling and the C38 is no exception. There are a few things that make the Bavaria’s stand out amongst their peers in this regard, including the new innovative hull design. The C38 has been designed with chines, steep angles situated between the sides and base of the boat, running all the way aft which gives her better downwind stability when sailing. She is also fitted with a self-tacking jib as standard, making the transition between tacks seamless and twin helm positions which help with visibility as you can always steer from the high side of cockpit.

Space

The space onboard only 38ft of boat is astounding. With every part of the boat, above and below deck designed meticulously to make the most of every centimetre. This is due in part to the innovative design of the hull. The distinctive V-Bow has opened the space in the forward cabin which is able to accommodate a large double bed with plenty of storage with two large wardrobes. The beam of the boat is kept all the way to the very aft of the boat and this works alongside the chines to maximise space in the aft cabins.

Sleeping arrangements can be easily sorted, with the option to have two or three cabins and a saloon table that drops down to be a double berth. The galley is spacious and the front-loading fridge saves leaning over the sides of the cabinets to reach the milk.  There is the option to have two heads, however the standing space in the forward cabin is a usually more popular.

On-deck the wide, uncluttered side-decks make moving around easy; whilst the large transom can be lowered at anchor to double up as a patio on the sea. At the bow a deep anchor locker with a separate compartment for the chain can be used to store fenders and lines. Two large sail lockers in the cockpit with a third locker underneath the port helm position, means that owners have plenty of space to stow their belongings.

Highly Customisable

The C38, as with all Bavaria’s, is highly customisable in terms of specification. Optional extras can be added at the point of build or retro-fitted. This makes the C38 ideal for a first yacht as it means that as owners develop their sea legs and get a better understanding of their specific needs, the C38 can accommodate them. As items can fitted retro-actively, it means that throughout the boat’s ownership, items such as heating and generators can be added later down the line, keeping the initial purchase cost to a minimum.

Affordability

The C38 is exceptionally well priced for what she is, making her an ideal first yacht. A boat with a good specification (on current pricelists which change biannually) sit in the region of £260,000 – £275,000 excluding VAT. Whilst many think it more sensible to go down the used-boat route when first starting out in their sailing journey, the benefits of buying new, especially for first-time buyers, far out way the costs.

Buying new gives owners the peace of mind that they can experience trouble free boating for the first years of ownership as the boat is covered by comprehensive warranties*. Not only does this help ensuring time on the water is enjoyable, financially, owners are protected against costly repairs that so often go hand in hand with buying older boats.

The Resale Value

Whilst the cost of new boats will always be more than their used boat equivalents, the resale value of a vessel is important to take into consideration. With the C38, the price increases that occur every six months with the brand-new models helps to reduce depreciation in second hand C38s. This alongside the fact that they are such a popular model ensures that, as long as the boat is kept in good condition, she is an easy sell.

More to the point, as the C38 makes such an excellent boat for first time buyers, she makes an attractive part exchange against a slightly larger yacht later down the line.

All Things Considered

By her nature the C38 is ideal for those wanting to start their yachting journey. She is a joy to sail and the owner’s onboard experience has been at the forefront of every decision relating to her design. Her affordability and high re-sale value make her a sensible investment. Whilst the ability to tailor each boat to the owners exact wishes ensures that each boat can made to suit the sort of sailing the owner requires.
